The efficiency craze of cloud-based transformation has caused players to lose ownership. After a cloud service outage, Xbox cannot even play CD-ROM games.
This matter is not that "the CD is too old", but that the digital identity is tied to the entity. On May 2, 2024, Microsoft's Xbox Live in North America went into a two-hour full-line failure. Official logs showed that it was an error in the routing table of Azure edge nodes that caused all 120 million active accounts to be kicked off the line. What's even more outrageous is that at the same time, players holding the original CD of "Halo" were inserting the CD in the living room, but received a pop-up window saying "Not verified, please check the network", and the game could not be started at all. The CD was originally the most original "ownership certificate", but it was forced to go through the cloud authentication link. Once the link broke, the physical disk also lost its right to use it.
From a technical perspective, Xbox Series X| S's system firmware will first request a digital signature verification from Xbox Live's authorization server when booting the CD. Microsoft's white paper states that this step is a "necessary step" to prevent piracy. However, verification requests go through the same Azure Load Balancer and share the same backend as online multi-person and cloud archives. The cloud service availability rate announced by Microsoft in 2023 is 99.9%, corresponding to a cumulative downtime of approximately 8.8 hours per year; while the local reading error rate of optical discs is below 0.02%, which is almost negligible. Treating the two equally is equivalent to locking "hardware failure" and "network failure" in the same safe with the same key. Once the safe door is stuck, no matter how good the key is, it will not be used.
For players, what they lose is not the suspension of a game, but the control of their own collection. The packaging, cover, and even scratches on the CD all carry the player's emotional investment. A 2022 "Game Informer" survey showed that 78% of respondents still regard CDs as a backup method that "can be accessed at any time without the need to connect to the Internet." Now, this sense of security has been replaced by "anytime, anywhere" in the cloud, but replaced by "failure anytime, anywhere." I bet it's not just Xbox. All console manufacturers that migrate local verification to the cloud will be impeached by players during the next large-scale outage.
Some people will say that cloud services provide faster updates and a more unified anti-theft mechanism, so players can play as long as they connect to the Internet. Their arguments are: ① The cloud can push patches instantly to avoid CD aging;② Digital signatures prevent piracy and protect developer profits;③ The SLA of cloud services is high enough to hardly affect daily use. Faced with these, I first divided their positions. The first point ignores the "offline playable" nature of the CD itself. In areas with unstable networks, this is precisely the biggest advantage of the CD. The second point equates anti-theft with deprivation of ownership. In fact, the root cause of piracy is often poor user experience rather than technical flaws. The third point regards a 99.9% SLA as "perfect" but does not take into account the user's "perceived availability." A two-hour outage is enough to make a player who is hosting a home game night lose the joy of the whole night. This perceptual loss is far heavier than the figure of 0.1%.
If this crisis was moved to the financial sector, similar logic would have long been alarming. In the 1990s, after banks migrated all checking accounts to electronic systems, there was news that "system downtime caused cash machines to collapse and customers queued for hours." Regulators at that time immediately required banks to retain a certain proportion of offline cash reserves to prevent "one-click failure". The price of efficiency is often to put all safety cushions on the same pillar. Players in the game industry also need "offline insurance."
The following bar chart compares the average monthly availability rate of Xbox Live 2023‑2024 with the success rate of local disc reading. It can be seen that the fluctuation of cloud services within 0.1% may seem insignificant, but the corresponding cumulative downtime has exceeded 10 days; while the success rate of CDs is almost 100%, and there are almost no days when they are not available.
Judging from the link of ownership, the CD should have been an asset in the hands of players, but in Microsoft's design, it was forced to hand over to the "cloud authorization server" first. Pressing all verifications to the same cloud service is equivalent to tying the player's collection, memory and entertainment to an invisible rope. Once the rope breaks, even the most primitive physical disk cannot be freed from the shackles. The price of efficiency is to turn "possession" into "dependence".
